Modular Synthesis as a Method of Inquiry

Modular synthesis can invoke magical and esoteric imagery. It’s frequently presented as a language represented by an inaccessible array of custom equipment, only to be employed by the most deft of alchemists or theoretical physicists. This view obscures the potential that is held by these instruments. Their most interesting applications can come from the novice, the uninitiated, or the person that dares to ask “What is this?” and “What can it do?” Utilizing curiosity as the primary medium, this course introduces students to a perspective that can aid their journey of sonic exploration and social connection. Using VCV Rack as our guide, this course will familiarize you with this free software and focus more on the technique than the technical. This course will also introduce both foundational history and information regarding synthesis, but with the primary purpose of offering students a new method of composing and performing music motivated by inquiry and exploration.
